How to Prepare for the climb

You don’t need technical climbing experience, but you should be in good physical shape. Our guides will teach you how to use gear like crampons (spikes for your boots), ropes, and ice axes. We’ll also give you a plan to help your body adjust to the altitude gradually — this is called acclimatization.

For your safety, we recommend at least 5 to 6 days on the mountain. This gives you time to hike, rest, train, and reach the summit with a better chance of success.

Most expeditions begin with a transfer from Tbilisi to Stepantsminda, a scenic three-hour drive along the Georgian Military Highway. Once in Stepantsminda, you will meet your guide, check your climbing equipment, and prepare for the ascent.

The popular 7-day itinerary via the AltiHut base camp allows gradual acclimatization and improves your chances of summiting. Day 1 is travel to Stepantsminda, Day 2 the hike to AltiHut at 3,014 meters, Day 3 moving to the Meteo Station, Day 4  acclimatization Day 5 Kazbek summit push, Day 6 a reserve day for weather delays, and Day 7  the descent back to Tbilisi. altihut

Climbing Mount Kazbek without a guide is possible for experienced alpinists but risky for most. The glacier crossing and summit require crampons, ice axes, and rope skills. Our certified guides ensure safety and success, especially for first-time climbers above 5,000 meters.

How to cross a Glacier

How to Cross the Gergeti Glacier on the Way to Mount Kazbek

Crossing the Gergeti Glacier is one of the most thrilling and essential parts of the Mount Kazbek expedition. This icy stretch lies between AltiHut (3014m) and Betlemi Hut (Meteo Station, 3653m) — and while it’s not extremely technical, it demands caution, basic glacier travel skills, and proper gear. Acclimatization is crucial for high-altitude glacier adventures; spend time at similar elevations to adapt to lower oxygen levels and reduce altitude sickness risk. Glacier conditions are safest in the early hours to avoid soft snow and hidden crevasses. The surface can be icy. Crampons and hiking poles help with balance on uneven terrain.  The safest route changes slightly depending on snow cover. It is better to hire mountain guides, they  can help avoid crevasses and melting snow bridges, ensure your route is safe, because hidden crevasses are always a risk. Always check weather  conditions before crossing.   and emergency response is available.

If you plan to climb Mount Kazbek, understanding how to cross Gergeti Glacier is key to reaching the base camp safely. Book a guided climb for peace of mind and expert support.

Climb to Kazbek

The best time to climb Mt. Kazbek

When you’re getting ready to climb Mt. Kazbek in Georgia, choosing the right time of year is super important. The best months to plan your Kazbek climb are from June to September. During this period, the weather is more stable, the temperatures are milder.  That means you’ll have an easier time walking on the trails, seeing where you’re going, and spotting dangerous areas like cracks in the glacier. It helps make your climb to the summit safer.

But even in summer, Mount Kazbek weather can be unpredictable. Storms, strong winds, and sudden cold spells can still happen. That’s why it’s really important to be fully prepared and bring all the climbing equipment—just in case the weather turns bad during your climb. Climbing equipment rental

Climbing Mount Kazbek in winter is much harder. The snow gets deep, the wind is stronger, and the cold can be brutal. If you’re new to mountaineering, winter climbs are not recommended. But if you’re experienced and ready for a serious challenge, winter can offer a more extreme adventure. You’ll need special winter gear and solid planning to stay safe on the icy trails.

If you want the best shot at a smooth climb, plan your Kazbek expedition in July or August. These months usually have the best weather, longer days, and more people on the trail, which can be helpful if something goes wrong. June and September are also good months—they’re a bit cooler and less crowded, which is perfect if you prefer a quieter experience on climbing Mt. Kazbek.

Common Mistakes During  Mt. Kazbek Climb

One common mistake climbers make on Mt. Kazbek is not allowing enough time to acclimatize. This puts your safety and summit success at risk. Without proper acclimatization, altitude sickness can cause headaches, dizziness, and extreme fatigue, often leading to a failed summit attempt.

To avoid this, pace your climb carefully. Stop at Altihut (3,014m) and Meteo Station (3,653m) to let your body adjust before going higher. Drink plenty of water and eat iron-rich foods to maintain oxygen levels. Avoid climbing more than 800 meters per day to help your body acclimate.

If you feel unwell at any time, descend immediately.

The best time for climbing Mt. Kazbek is June to September, when weather is most stable. Avoid late autumn and winter climbs unless you are an experienced mountaineer familiar with extreme cold.

Always check the latest Kazbek climbing weather forecast before your ascent. Here

Many climbers come unprepared with the wrong or missing equipment. Mt. Kazbek needs technical gear, especially for glacier crossings and high-altitude conditions. Essential gear includes crampons, ice axes, ropes, glacier glasses, waterproof clothing, and sturdy mountaineering boots. A well-insulated sleeping bag rated for -20°C or colder is crucial to survive freezing nights. Dress in layers: base, mid, and insulation layers to manage your body temperature. Don’t forget high-altitude gloves to prevent frostbite. Here

Download the Mt. Kazbek Climbing Checklist and equipment rental form to prepare well.   Climbing equipment rental-reservation form

Some climbers underestimate Kazbek and struggle due to poor fitness or lack of training. Prepare at least 12 weeks before your climb with cardio, strength, and endurance workouts. Practice long hikes carrying a 15-20 kg backpack to simulate the climb. Altitude training helps improve breathing efficiency.

Learn how to use crampons to walk safely on ice, self-arrest with your ice axe, and stay roped with your team for glacier safety. Move carefully and listen to your guides to avoid falls. Practice keeping feet wide apart with crampons and mastering ice axe self-arrest — a key skill for stopping a slide.

Don’t rush your summit attempt. Take short breaks every 20-30 minutes to optimize oxygen use. Eat high-energy snacks like nuts, chocolate, and protein bars for fuel.

For the best experience, join a professional all-inclusive guided Mt. Kazbek expedition — fixed group or private tours available.
