Often called the “Georgian Dolomites” by those in the know, this jagged rock fortress is quickly becoming a must-visit spot for climbers looking to experience of the Caucasus without the crowds. Located just a short drive from Stepantsminda (Kazbegi), this massif delivers some of the most diverse climbing in all of Georgia. Mount Chaukhi Massif – The dramatic jagged peaks of Georgia’s Dolomites rising above alpine meadows]
Chaukhi makes the perfect acclimatization climb before climb Mount Kazbek. We’ve been organizing combined expeditions for years, and the success rate for Kazbek summits jumps dramatically when climbers warm up on Chaukhi first.
The Chaukhi massif features several excellent acclimatization peaks:
You can choose one of these mounts before your expedition to Mt. Kazbek. Climbing these peaks will be a perfect acclimatization, gets your body perfectly adjusted to the altitude before climb to Kazbek (5,047m). Plus, the technical skills you’ll practice on Chaukhi’s rock faces translate perfectly to the mixed terrain you’ll encounter higher up on Kazbek.
Unlike the more famous glaciated peaks of Georgia, Chaukhi is all about sweet rock climbing. The massif is basically a playground of dolomitic limestone that offers everything from easy scrambles to serious multi-pitch routes.
The approach itself is worth the trip – you’ll hike through the gorgeous Juta Valley, passing mountain streams and wildflower meadows that are absolutely bursting with color during summer months.
Once you reach the base of Chaukhi, you’ll be staring up at what looks like a medieval castle made of stone. They are actually super fun to climb, with solid holds and amazing positions. Even if you are new to technical climbing, there are routes here you can climb with a mountain guide.
The best time for Chaukhi climbing is from mid-June through late September.
July-August is peak season with the most stable weather and warmest temps. The trails are busier, but conditions are typically perfect.
In September he temperatures cool down, the tourist crowds thin out, and the autumn colors start to appear.
If you’re combining with Mt. the expedition to Kazbek, July-August offers the highest summit success rates for the big mountain, though September can also work well if you don’t mind cooler temperatures.
