Sabertse sits above Stepantsminda, near the Gergeti Trinity Church, and is ideal for acclimatization. Located at about 3,000 meters, it helps climbers adjust before continuing to Bethlemi Hut or the summit. Spending a night here reduces the risk of altitude sickness and improves your chances of a successful climb.

The trail to Sabertse gains 800 meters in elevation and takes about three to four hours to complete. It’s roughly six kilometers long and moderately challenging. The campsite is wild and natural, with flat grassy areas protected by stone walls for pitching tents.

Best time to hike to Sabertse

The best time to hike to Sabertse is during the summer season, between  June and September. During this period, the trails are usually free of heavy snow, and the weather conditions are relatively stable. In the shoulder seasons and winter months, heavy snow, cold temperatures, and unpredictable weather can make trekking to Sabertse challenging or even dangerous. Always check the latest weather forecasts and trail conditions before setting out, and remember that proper preparation is key to a successful hike in the Caucasus Mountains.

Before setting out for Sabertse, it’s essential to pack proper trekking gear. This includes sturdy hiking boots, warm clothing suitable for cold mountain nights, a quality tent and sleeping bag for camping at high altitudes, trekking poles for navigating rocky paths, and a GPS device or offline maps for safe navigation.
