Mount Kazbek Routes – Reach the Summit for Beginners
There are a few different routes to climb Mount Kazbek from Stepantsminda village, but not all are beginner-friendly. While several paths lead to the Mount Kazbek summit, the safest and easiest option—especially for first-time climbers—is the South-East standard Kazbek route.
Mount Kazbek (5,054m) offers several climbing routes, with the standard Kazbek route from Stepantsminda being the most popular and accessible for every climbers. This route takes climbers through Gergeti Glacier, Betlemi Hut Kazbek, and The Plateau Kazbek, before reaching the Mount Kazbek summit.
The classic Mount Kazbek route begins at Gergeti Trinity Church, ascending through alpine meadows before reaching Sabertse Campsite (3,000m). From there, climbers continue toward Betlemi Hut (Meteo Station, 3,653m), the main Kazbek base camp, where acclimatization hikes help prepare for high-altitude conditions.
Beyond Betlemi Hut, the climb becomes more technical, requiring proper mountaineering gear for Mount Kazbek, including crampons, ropes, and ice axes.
