How to Reach Mount Ortsveri
Stepantsminda to Gergeti Trinity Church (2200 meters)
Your adventure begins in Stepantsminda, a picturesque town nestled in the shadows of towering peaks. Here, the iconic Gergeti Trinity Church, perched high on a hillside, stands as your gateway to the climb. Dating back to the 14th century, this ancient monastery is not only a cultural landmark but also a place of serenity that sets the tone for your journey ahead. A gentle hike of 1 to 1.5 hours takes you to the church, offering stunning views of the valley below and a preview of the grandeur awaiting you.
Gergeti Trinity Church to Arsha Pass (2,940 meters)
After visiting the Gergeti Trinity Church, the trail continues steadily uphill. As you leave the church behind, the landscape changes, offering wide-open views of green alpine meadows and towering ridgelines. Along the way, you’ll walk past wildflowers and rocky outcrops, with Mount Kazbek rising proudly behind you.
Gradually, the trail becomes steeper and more remote. Although the climb is not technical, it does require steady effort, especially as the altitude increases. Typically, this section takes 2 to 3 hours, depending on your pace and the weather.
Eventually, you’ll reach Arsha Pass at 2,940 meters. This is a perfect spot to take a break, enjoy a snack, and take in the breathtaking scenery.
Arsha Pass to Meteo Station (3650 meters)
Crossing the Arsha Pass, the landscape transforms into something truly wild. The rugged terrain challenges your footing, while the distant peaks of Mount Kazbek and Mount Ortsveri dominate the horizon. The next stop is the Meteo Station, a crucial waypoint for climbers tackling these legendary summits. This basic refuge serves as a resting point, where you can refuel, check your gear, and soak in the mountain atmosphere. The 3 to 4-hour hike to the station is demanding but rewarding, preparing you for the technical stages ahead.
Meteo Station to Black Cross (4000 meters)
The climb becomes more intense as we head toward the Black Cross, a key landmark at 4000 meters. The air grows thinner, and the path steeper, requiring stamina and focus. The Black Cross itself serves as a decision point for climbers: take the right trail toward Mount Kazbek or turn left toward the summit of Mount Ortsveri. We’ll pause here for a well-deserved break, taking in the incredible views and gearing up for the final push.
